CVIP Inspection Ready? 7 Essential Checks For Heavy-Duty Trucks To Pass
Discover 7 essential checks to help your heavy-duty truck pass a CVIP inspection. Learn how to check brakes, tires, suspension, and more for CVIP compliance.

CVIP inspections can be daunting, but they don’t have to be. All you have to do is prepare correctly, and you’ll pass. Roll up to the shop and hope to pass with flying colours—that’s when you have issues!
But how do you prepare correctly for this essential check? Well, with our CVIP checklist, of course!
1. Brakes
Brakes are the most important system for safety on the road. Because of this, they’re one of the most scrutinized aspects of the CVIP inspection. Before your inspection, check the following:
- Brake shoes for wear
- Air compressor functionality
- Air tanks and lines for any moisture or debris that could compromise the air pressure
- Slack adjusters, ensuring they aren't worn and are properly adjusted
If you hear screeching, hissing, or notice leaks, don’t wait until inspection day to take care of these issues.
2. Tires
Your brakes may be in perfect condition, but if your tires aren’t, it won’t matter. Canadian law is very strict about tire conditions. Make sure they meet the proper tread depth, have no bulges or cuts, and are properly inflated.
A big one is ensuring the tire pressure is within the manufacturer’s specs. Uneven wear can cause issues with alignment or suspension, so pay close attention to those components as well.
3. Lighting & Reflectors
According to the CVIP requirements, your headlights, taillights, brake lights, turn signals, and reflectors must all be fully functional and in good condition. Visibility is essential for safety, especially during those dark and snowy winter months. Any damaged or missing reflectors or inoperative lights are a big red flag for inspectors.
4. Suspension & Steering
Although it’s essential to a comfy ride, your suspension is also a key safety feature. All components will be inspected to ensure that they are in working order. Key items include:
- Leaf springs for cracks or corrosion
- Air suspension bags for leaks or punctures
- Shock absorbers for leaks and ensuring they are functioning correctly
- Steering components, such as the steering wheel play and tie rods
If there are clunks, squeaks, or noticeable lean to your truck, you’ve got issues that will need addressing before the inspection.
5. Frame & Undercarriage
Your truck's frame and undercarriage need to be in solid shape. Cracks in the frame or corrosion can lead to an instant failure. Be sure to inspect for any signs of rust, damage, or welds that might compromise the structural integrity.
A truck that’s not structurally sound can be hazardous and is something that inspectors take very seriously.
6. Exhaust System
Your exhaust system reduces harmful emissions and keeps your truck running efficiently and within regulatory compliance. Inspectors will check for exhaust leaks and ensure that the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF), exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) systems, and Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) components are all functioning correctly. Any leaks or tampered systems will result in failure, so double-check everything is in place and working.
7. Fluid Levels & Leaks
Finally, all fluid levels should be inspected, and any leaks should be checked. Low engine oil, transmission fluid, coolant, or power steering fluid levels can flag your truck for failure. Any leaks will also result in an instant failure.
Even a small drip can signal bigger problems, like a failing gasket or damaged hose. Fix these issues well before your inspection.
Pass Your CVIP With Flying Colours
By thoroughly checking your brakes, tires, lights, suspension, frame, exhaust, and fluid levels, you’ll set yourself up for success. Keeping your truck CVIP-ready ensures compliance with Canadian road laws and helps maintain its safety and longevity. Regular maintenance and a thorough pre-inspection check can make a world of difference.
If you're not sure where to start or if any of these checks reveal an issue, it's always wise to consult with a professional mechanic with CVIP inspection experience.
Stay safe, and keep rolling.
